Joe Kavalier's Impulsive Decision Making

Joe Kavalier has a plenty of difficult decisions to make but he makes a lot of poor decision, and he is very impulsive with his decision making. He doesn't take enough time to process what is happening before he makes his decisions. For example, when he was at the bar mitzvah and he received information of his brother's ship sinking, he decided to participate in an act that Harry Houdini would typically do. This decision was impulsive, and he was likely trying to kill himself. The decision to kill himself was obviously a poor decision but he made that decision quickly. He didn't stop and think about Rosa or Sammy, he just decided to lock himself in a crate and submerge himself under water. It seems pretty clear that he decided he want to kill himself since apparently the handcuffs hadn't been tampered with and he had made no attempt to get out of the crate.

Similarly, Joe Kavalier continued to make impulsive and bad decisions after his suicide attempt. After not even stopping to talk with Rosa or her father, he quickly decided to leave the house and go enlist in the Navy. Joe definitely should've stopped and talked about this decision with Rosa who should have a say in it given they had been in a relationship for quite some time. However, Joe made an impulsive decision and decided to leave New York behind to look for revenge. This decision turned out to be even worse since Rosa had just discovered that she was pregnant. Joe's impulsive decisions negatively impacted her life along with his since he was leaving her behind and possibly his newborn son behind. Rosa didn't know what to do and asked Sammy to help her find an abortion after Joe abandoned her.

Joe doesn't take the time to think about his decisions and their consequences. When he was trying to negotiate higher wages with his boss and was told he could no longer include Nazis in his novel, he quickly decided he would no longer work for Empire Comics. However, he was quickly convinced to change his mind. But, if it hadn't been for his peers, Joe would've made another impulsive and poor decision that would've uprooted everything he had worked for in New York since he had arrived.  When it comes to making decisions, Joe is very impulsive, and he doesn't take the time to consider other possible, more reasonable alternatives.
